What is the speed limit for E-Bikes in your state |
Many States in the U.S. have adopted a three-class system to describe the different levels of electric bikes. The classes are as follows:
It can be clearly seen that class 1 and 2 are regulated like regular bicycles and will follow the same rules and be allowed to use the same paths and infrastructure as regular bicycles. However, because class 3 e-bikes are capable of higher speeds, they have extra regulations and require additional equipment, although, they are still technically considered a bicycle. Examples include long range electric bikes such as the Himiway Cruiser and Himiway Step-Thru. Currently, as stated by U.S. Federal Law, class 3 e-bikes have a minimum age of 16 years old to operate and require a helmet. Class 3 e-bikes are also not allowed on standard bike paths. The reason that class 3 e-bikes are allowed to travel at speeds up to 28 mph is because the Consumer Product Safety Commission has clarified that the law does allow e-bikes to travel faster than 20 mph when using foot pedaling and the e-bike’s motor power at the same time.

What are the differences between Class1 and Class2, and Class 3 E-Bike? |
Different classes of e-bike have different characteristics and are adapted to different people and traffic laws. If you are hesitating about which class of e-bike to buy, just follow us to learn more about the three classes:
“Class 1 electric bicycle” shall mean an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour. In other words, it’s maximum motor-assisted speed is 20 mph. And you are allowed to ride it on most bicycle lanes and streets, because it has a lower speed, which corresponds to higher safety, and is not easy to cause serious traffic accidents, so the rules are more relaxed compared with rules for e-bikes in class 2&3. There is no age limit for riders, and no driver’s license and license plate are required. But you need to be aware that people under the age of 17 are expected to wear a helmet.
“Class 2 electric bicycle” shall mean an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle, and that is not capable of providing assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour. The maximum motor-assisted speed is the same as that of class 1. The difference is that the electric bicycle in class 2 has a throttle design and can use pure electric mode without pedal assistance. When you want to use the electric motor, just twist the knob on the handlebar or press the button to free your feet. Similarly, you don’t need a driver’s license and license plate for riding them, but people under 17 are also supposed to wear a helmet. Class 2 e-bike is absolutely meet the commuting and holiday travel needs of office workers, students, and housewives. It is worth mentioning that both Himiway Cruiser and Step-Thru electric bicycles are in Class 2. As for the lanes that are allowed to ride, you can ride them on most bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and roads if there is no special regulation. Except for some mountain bike lanes, because compared to pedal assist, throttle assist may cause more damage to these lanes.
“Class 3 electric bicycle” shall mean an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 28 miles per hour. Although the definition of electric bicycles in class 3 is similar to that of class 1, just the maximum motor-assisted speed has increased to 28 mph, the regulations for class 3 e-bikes are much stricter. First, due to the increase in speed, the age limit for class 3 riders is over 16 years old, and anyone who rides these bikes is required to wear a helmet. But thankfully, the driver’s license and license plate are not needed either. Obviously, the increase in speed may lead to serious accidents, and excessive speed will bring about a decrease in safety. Therefore, although you can ride them without any permission, class 3 e-bikes can only be ridden on highways and roads that are open to all types of vehicles. Regular bicycle paths, pavements, and trails are off-limits. Of course, the United States is a large country composed of 50 states, and each state has different local regulations, and the rules change frequently. You should be familiar with the local rules and always pay attention to local regulations before you start your riding.

What is the average lifespan of HIMIWAY E-Bike Motor? |
Most electric bike motors last between 3 to 10 years. As you can see, the motors can vary in life span but they are regarded as one of the longest service life parts. Because they are so integral to the operation of the bike, the motor can often be the root cause of needing to upgrade to a new electric bike. There are two different types of motors: geared hub motors and mid-drive motors. Geared hub motors experience a lot of friction and more wear and tear than some mid-drive motors. This is because each time the motor case rotates slowly with the wheel, the internal gear inside the motor rotates many more times at a faster speed. Therefore, geared hub motors might have to be replaced between three thousand and ten thousand miles. High quality motors may last closer to the higher end of this range. Geared hub motors are not as expensive as mid-drive motors and can more easily be replaced. If you find you have replaced your geared hub motor 3-5 times already, you should consider buying a new e-bike. At that point, the cost and hassle of replacing the motor begin to outweigh the cost of a new bike. Mid-drive motors, on the other hand, have additional sensors, components, and a unique design. This additional complexity allows for a much longer life than gear hub motors but does come with some drawbacks. One drawback is that mid-drive motors may overheat and may rust faster when wet and not wiped off. Therefore, it is important to keep your bike and motor components dry. The second drawback is mid-drive motors are harder to replace. If you find you have replaced your mid-drive motor two to three times, you should consider upgrading to a new electric bike.
