What is the lifespan of a battery ?
Depending on the length of your journeys- we would estimate up to 1000 full charge cycles if properly maintained. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
How fast can I go with an eBike?
Regulation in the UK/EU restrict eBikes to 250W power and 15.5mph speed. This covers public roads and cycle paths/ shared use paths. Having said that, our ebikes can be de-restricted for higher speed & power when used off-road. CycloTricity is the only manufacturer to offer a dual mode so you can get more out of your ebike where it is safe and legal to do so.
Do I need a licence or insurance for riding an eBike?
As long as you ensure you are using the 250W on-road mode, no licence, insurance or road tax is required for riding on UK roads or cycle paths. The rider must also be over 14 years of age.
What distance can I get from a fully charged battery ?
This depends on the type of battery you select. Based on a rider weiging 75kg and cycling on smooth flat terrain with minimal stops/starts, the following guide is what you should expect from most ebike systems (please note most manufacturers exaggerate the milage, so it’s best to focus on comparing the battery spec instead of comparing the milage figure. Most experts agree that the following battery spec would roughly yield the following milage on an ebike); 36V/9Ah battery 25-30 miles, 36V/11Ah battery 30-35 miles, 36V/15Ah battery 40-45 miles. 36V/17Ah battery 45-50 miles. These will vary slightly depending on the level of assistance given by the motor and the use of a throttle.
How do I get the most out of my battery ?
When you first receive your new equipment, charge the battery for 12 hours and then use your eBike until fully discharged. Do this 3 times. Afterwards, you can charge it as and when is necessary. Usually 3-4 hours would suffice. If you intend to leave the battery inactive for a prolonged period, make sure you store it with 50% charge. Make sure you charge it for 1 hour once a month until you start using your product more frequently again. These tips will extend the life of your battery.

Where's my stuff ?
The shipping note emailed to you contains the tracking number and the name of the courier company. Delivery is next working day, unless it extends over a UK holiday. We use TNT for overseas deliveries, Tuffnells for bikes and APC for kits, parts and folding bikes.
Will the wheel fit my frame ?
fit the front drive eKit, your fork needs to have 100mm distance between the drop-outs (which is the majority of bike forks). To fit the rear drive eKit, the rear dropouts on your bike need to have 135mm clearance (again, this is the case with the majority of bikes). Our motor wheels have a 9mm diameter nutted axle front and rear, which will fit most modern bikes with the exception of high end mountain bikes with an oversize axle system. If you have one of these non-standard bikes, you are recommended to consider the middle drive eKit as its installation is independent of wheels and forks.
Can I visit the premises to see the eBike/kits first?
As we are an online company we don't have a dedicated showroom, but you are welcome to pop in to our headquarters anytime between 10am & 4pm, Monday to Friday. If you can phone first to let us know your coming we can charge some batteries in preparation. Like most independent bike shops we accept donations of biscuits.

eBike Conversion Kits(3)
What is the difference between a standard eBike and a ladies eBike?
Ladies bikes have a step through frame making it easier to get in the saddle. This differs from a standard frame design which some people have difficulty getting their leg over.
What’s included in an electric bike conversion kit UK?
1. Motor: Comes integrated in a wheel size of your choice (reaches maximum speed allowed by UK/EU regulation, i.e. 15.5mph).
2. The middle drive and the rear drives can be de-restricted to power higher than the default 250W.
3. Wheel material: Double walled alloy rim with reinforced spokes to withstand extra pressure.
4. Throttle: thumb type – gradual lever, the further it is pressed, the more power is provided (this is an optional extra with the middle drive kit).
Brake compatibility: Compatible with both disc brakes and V-brakes
5. Controller: The appropriate Amp rating will be provided depending on the type of kit you choose.
6. Cables: Motor cable and system cable (designed for simplicity and minimal wiring)
7. Box/Bag: for mounting the controller (for use with a frame battery)
Fork compatibility:
8. Front drive kits - Minimum 100mm between fork drop-outs is required (which is the vast majority of forks).
9. Rear drive kits - Minimum 135mm between fork drop-outs is required (which is the vast majority of rear forks).
10. Apart from a battery, the above components are all that is needed to fully convert a bicycle into an electric bike. All our kit packages include these essential items. All you need to add is a battery (and some optional accessories for extra features).
Pedal Assist System Upgrades?
If you opt for one of our Front or Rear Drive eKits, you can upgrade it by adding one of our optional Pedal Assistance Systems (PAS). A Pedal Assistance System is a device that senses your pedalling and makes your kit give automatic assistance, i.e. you do not have to press the throttle throughout your journey
We have two PAS packages on offer
1. Pedal Assistance System with LED Dashboard (Basic) This is our basic PAS upgrade which includes a handlebar dashboard allowing you to shift between three power levels; low, medium or high. Compatible with the 250W and the 500W systems only.
2. Pedal Assistance System with LCD Computer (Advanced) This is our top of the range electric bike kit upgrade for you who want to combine your conversion kit with state of the art technology, yet at a surprisingly good value. This package combines a Pedal Assistance System with an advanced LCD handlebar monitor which, not only gives you five levels of power, but also displays your speed, journey distance, time, average speed and many other readings. Compatible with the 250W, 500W and 1000W systems.
Although these are optional upgrades, you are highly recommended to install a Pedal Assistance System as it will transform your riding experience and improve the longevity of the battery.
If, however, you opt for our Middle Drive eKit, then you do not need to purchase an additional PAS as this comes pre-installed in the motor by default.
IMPORTANT: If you wish to include a Pedal Assistance System with your Front or Rear Drive eKit, the bottom bracket on your bike needs to be a Square Taper type (which is the most common bottom bracket on ordinary bikes). If you don’t have a square taper bottom bracket, you may need to replace it as well as the crank arms to make your bike compatible with the PAS. If in doubt, please consult a bike service shop on how to fit a square taper bottom bracket on your bike. Alternatively, you may opt for purchasing the Middle Drive eKit instead as it already has this function integrated by default.
Which ekit is right for me?
The most cost effective strategy in a kit purchase is working out in advance what you’ll generally use it for. That way, you can pick a variation suitable for your needs without adding unnecessary costs. Front and rear drive kits both have their own unique characteristics. We have divided our kits into four categories that generally cover the needs of most people. To help you narrow down what’s right for you, here is a summary of the main differences:
250W Front Drive
The front drive kit is a geared hub motor which means it is a lot smaller and lighter than its rear drive counterparts, in fact, it is barely noticeable as a motor once installed. In other words, if a lightweight and well disguised kit is of importance, this is a good option to consider. Combined with pedalling, it gives an all-wheel-drive experience offering better stability and weight distribution with the battery. It is also a lot simpler to install than a rear drive as there is no need to readjust any gears.
Even though 250W is less power than the other categories, remember that 250W is the maximum power legally allowed on-road, so it is a perfectly adequate hill climber with equivalent power to the majority of purpose-built electric bikes on the market.
The front drive kit is also the most cost effective, in other words, if you intend to use the kit on-road most of the time and spend as little as possible, this would be the pragmatic choice.
500W Rear Drive
We’ve introduced this category as it uses the same 36V batteries as the front drive motors. Which makes this kit strike the perfect balance between cost and power. Prices are not much higher than the 250W front drive but with the benefit that once you add the LCD computer, you can de-restrict it (for off road only) and get a glimpse of some of the power that you can experience with the high power off-road kits. In other words, it is the best of both worlds at great value. The only downside is it’s heavier than the 250W front drive kit.
This kit is recommended for you who are on a budget, does most of cycling on-road, but want the occasional off-road fun added and don’t mind a slightly heavier bike. Please note that the kit will be supplied restricted to 250W by default and will require the LCD add-on to de-restrict it to the full 500W for off-road use.
1000W Rear Drive
This category is our favourite! Once you try it, you can never go back to anything else! It has been developed purely for the thrill seekers among us. Since it’s a 48V system, the battery makes it more costly than its counterparts. Having said that, it offers an adrenaline-fuelled ride rarely found in conversion kits. It is packed with torque, power and will propel you to speeds up to 50km/h and climb incredibly steep hills. This kit is recommended for the outdoorsy spirit, the mountain biker and you who appreciate the exhilaration that comes with speed and power. Please note that the kit will be supplied restricted to 250W by default and will require the LCD add-on to de-restrict it to the full 1000W for off-road use.
500W Middle Drive
This category is the all-rounder. It is as light as the 250W Front Drive, but with the power of a 500W motor! In fact, it has torque much higher than the regular 500W Rear Drive kit, which makes it a much better hill climber. It is positioned in the middle of the bike for the best weight distribution there is. It uses a 36V volt battery which makes it a fairly cost-effective purchase. The PAS and LCD screen are included by default making for an extra cost saving.
It is also suitable for non-standard bikes that has unusual forks where hub motors don’t fit.
Can I fit the kit myself ?
he kits are designed to be easy to fit. They come with color coded cables and push fit connectors. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist, just a little common sense, cable ties and hand tools. We have installation instructions on the website under "support ". Alternatively your local bike shop can fit it for you for a small fee.
What torque does the motor generate ?
The 250w motor puts out 28nm of torque.
The 500w motor puts out 35nm of torque.
The 1000w motor puts out 46nm of torque.
Can I refit the gears from my current rear wheel onto a new motored one ?
The rear drive motors are compatible with 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 speed freewheels (not compatible with cassette sprockets, i.e. if your bike is fitted with a cassette, you can purchase a freewheel together with your kit for it to fit). If you have a single speed bike, you can install a 3 speed freewheel for compatibility (and use only one of the 3 speeds). This will give more options for a better chain line.
Will the wheel fit my frame ?

Do I need to buy an LCD computer to make the kit operate ?
No. You can run your kit without it. The LCD computer is necessary to unlock the full power of the high power motors. It can be purchased at a later stage if full power is not immediately needed.
Is the battery removable for charging ?
All the battery types ( with the exception of the folding bikes ) are removable for recharging and to prevent theft. They come with two keys as standard which lock the battery to the accompanying bracket. Each key set is different, so it is best to separate the keys in case one is lost. Each lock barrel has a number that matches the number on the keys ( handy if you own more than one battery ).

What do I do with the plastic ring on the motor hub?
The black plastic ring is there to make the 6 rotor bolts easier to remove. If rim brakes (V-Brakes) are used, the plastic ring can be left in situ. If disc brakes are used this ring should be discarded before replacing it with your rotor, using the same 6 bolts. A small amount of thread lock is beneficial when refitting the bolts to prevent them from coming loose.
My friend has offered me the use of his 48 volt battery can I use it in place of my 36 volt one?
Like anything electrical, the system is designed to run a specific size of battery. A 48 volt battery has too much power for a 36 volt system, leading to the controller burning out and potentially damaging the rest of the electrics.
Are disc brakes better than rim brakes?
Cable actuated disc brakes are better in poor weather and will work even if the rim is buckled. The rim doesn't get worn down because the pads are impacting on a disc instead. The pads are made of a harder compound than rim brake pads and will last longer before needing replaced. The same type of cable is used in both rim and disc brake systems. Servicing or adjusting both types of brake is very simple. Hydraulic disc brakes are more effective in stopping than the cable disc brakes. Servicing a hydraulic brake can be messy and isn't quite as easy.
I can only get 3 of the 4 lights to turn green on my battery, is this normal?
This is normal..The first light is always red, even when fully charged. The red light is an indication of low power.
My de restricted 1000w wheel doesn't exceed 30mph, is it faulty?
The de restricted 1000w rear motor wheel is described has having a top speed of 25mph. As it exceeds this it is not faulty. If more speed is required a 1500w motor will do this. The wheel is designed to assist the rider but not do all the work.

How do I fit a front 250W conversion wheel?
Will a 250w kit fit my road bike?
Most likely. Depending on the type of your road bike, modifications may be necessary. Handlebar accessories such as LED/LCD and throttle will need to be fitted to a handlebar extension ( a T shaped bar that extends out from the stem, can be purchased cheaply online). Bikes with oversize bottom brackets eg Hollowtech, may have trouble fitting a PAS sensor due to the axle diameter and distance from the frame to the crank arm. Having said that, PAS is not necessary to run the eKit, you can run it by throttle instead. The rims we use are primarily designed for use with hybrid tyres eg 28mm upwards. Not all road bikes will accept this width of tyre.
The safest bet is to opt for the Middle Drive eKit as it has the PAS integrated by default and requires no external installation. It also means you get to keep your rims and tires as they are with no modification.
What's the difference between a cassette and a freewheel?
A cassette is a series of rings that slide onto a body on the rear hub and held in place by a lock ring. A freewheel is a one-piece unit that has the body built-in and threads onto the hub. Most cassettes have 8 rings or more, whereas freewheels usually contain 8 or less. Many low end or older bikes will use a freewheel system. A cassette requires tools for fitting, a freewheel doesn't.
A quick search on YouTube will show a simple visual demonstration around the difference between the two.
What ratio is on the freewheel?
A 6 speed freewheel has a 14 tooth high gear and 28 tooth low gear. 7 speed is similar. 8 speed is 13/28, 9 speed is 13/32, 10 speed is 11/36.
I want to get to work quicker. Which kit will go at 50mph for 15 miles?
Our 1000W Rear Drive eKit with a 48V/12Ah battery should achieve this. Please note running it at full power means the battery will likely run out just before hitting 15miles.
If the 15mile distance is a hard requirement, you’re recommended to get the 48V/16Ah battery upgrade to give yourself a buffer mileage wise.
Alternatively, you can restrict your motor to 250W and run at 25kph. This will give you a good mileage with the regular 48V/12Ah battery.
Please remember it is a legal requirement that the 50kph mode should be limited to off-road use. So you will most likely use the 250W mode on your way to work anyway.

Are eBikes heavy ?
Our bikes start at 19kg for the Wallet folding model and go up to 25kg for the Stealth mountain bike.
This will vary slightly depending on the size of frame,motor and battery.
Is an electric mountain bike right for me?
This mainly depends on the type of riding you are doing. These bikes are great fun off road and made to be more durable than standard eBike. However they do tend to weigh slightly more and have high powered systems that can only be used in specific area's.
What torque does the motor generate ?

Unlike a child's bike which is measured by wheel size, adult bikes are measured by frame size.

Can I use the bike in the rain ?
Yes, if fitted correctly the system is water resistant. It can be used in rain showers but not submerged. As with any bike the use of power washers for cleaning is NOT advised. It will remove grease from areas that need to be kept lubricated. Regular cleaning and maintenance is recommended to get the most of your bicycle. As with all bikes the chain should be wiped with a clean dry cloth and lightly re oiled after use in the rain.
Can I ride the bike without the motor being on ?
Yes, the bike will ride fine without the assistance being on. Our bikes do have higher gears fitted than many non electric bikes but until riding uphill this isn't noticeable. The extra weight of the electrics will make the bike feel a little sluggish and slow to accelerate.
Can I use the bike under the influence of alcohol ?
It is an offence to operate e-bikes while impaired by alcohol (or drugs ), even if the blood alcohol level is below .08. If banned because of a DUI, you're not allowed to ride an e-bike, even though you don't need a licence to ride one.
Who can service an eBike and how often ?
As many independent bike shops now sell ebikes they also have the ability to service them. As with any bike, we advise having it serviced every 5 or 6 months if used leisurely. If used for commuting daily then every 3 or 4 months. Replacement mechanical parts eg chains, brake pads etc are standard components and can be sourced locally.
Is the battery removable for charging ?
All the battery types ( with the exception of the folding bikes ) are removable for recharging and to prevent theft. They come with two keys as standard which lock the battery to the accompanying bracket. Each key set is different, so it is best to separate the keys in case one is lost. Each lock barrel has a number that matches the number on the keys ( handy if you own more than one battery ).
How do I get the pedals to fit ?
The end of the pedals are marked with an L for left or an R for right. The left pedal is for the crank arm without the chainring on it. The right is for the arm with the ring.
Both pedal threads should be lightly greased to assist fitting and in case of removal at a later date.
The left pedal threads on anti clockwise and should go on easily by hand. If this is not the case it may be going on squint ( cross threaded ). The right pedal threads on clockwise. Once fitted both pedals should be fully tightened with a 15mm spanner. This prevents the pedals unscrewing and damaging the crank arms.
Can I change the non electric components?
Our non electric parts are bicycle industry standard size eg. 27.2mm seatpost, 25.4 handlebar clamp diameter. We are aware that bar width, stem length, saddle padding etc. are personal preference. Most local bike shops stock a range of parts to customise the bike for the owner, be it extra wide riser bars, shorter steeper stems or inline seat posts.
Can I pay for an ebike through a ride to work scheme?
We accept vouchers from Cyclescheme, Bike Plus, Halfords cycle2work and Caboodle.
Your employer will be able to tell you which one they use, when it can be used and how much you can spend.
I got a puncture in the rear tyre can you send a new tube under warranty?
Tyres, inner tubes, brake pads and the gear system are classed as wear & tear items and are not covered in the warranty by any bike manufacturer.
Investing in heavy duty tyres will reduce the chance of a puncture in the future. Regular maintenance of the gears will ensure smooth running and a better functionality.
How do I fit a throttle to my bike?
My eBike is 14 months old & has developed a problem. As it wasn't used for 3 months over winter is it still within warranty?
Your warranty runs for 12 months from date of delivery for the original owner only. Warranty is non transferable.
My friend has offered me the use of his 48 volt battery can I use it in place of my 36 volt one?

Are eBike heavy ?
Our bikes start at 19kg for the Wallet folding model and go up to 25kg for the Stealth mountain bike.
This will vary slightly depending on the size of frame,motor and battery.

Unlike a child's bike which is measured by wheel size, adult bikes are measured by frame size

Can I use the bike in the rain ?
Yes, if fitted correctly the system is water resistant. It can be used in rain showers but not submerged. As with any bike the use of power washers for cleaning is NOT advised. It will remove grease from areas that need to be kept lubricated. Regular cleaning and maintenance is recommended to get the most of your bicycle. As with all bikes the chain should be wiped with a clean dry cloth and lightly re oiled after use in the rain.
Can I ride the bike without the motor being on ?
Yes, the bike will ride fine without the assistance being on. Our bikes do have higher gears fitted than many non electric bikes but until riding uphill this isn't noticeable. The extra weight of the electrics will make the bike feel a little sluggish and slow to accelerate.
Can I use the bike under the influence of alcohol ?
It is an offence to operate e-bikes while impaired by alcohol (or drugs ), even if the blood alcohol level is below .08. If banned because of a DUI, you're not allowed to ride an e-bike, even though you don't need a licence to ride one.
Who can service an eBike and how often ?
As many independent bike shops now sell ebikes they also have the ability to service them. As with any bike, we advise having it serviced every 5 or 6 months if used leisurely. If used for commuting daily then every 3 or 4 months. Replacement mechanical parts eg chains, brake pads etc are standard components and can be sourced locally.
I have limited space to store a bike, how big are they ?
Our folding electric bike measures 80cm high x 100cm long x 30cm wide. This will fit most large cupboards, car rear seats and motor homes.
Is the battery removable for charging ?
All the battery types ( with the exception of the folding bikes ) are removable for recharging and to prevent theft. They come with two keys as standard which lock the battery to the accompanying bracket. Each key set is different, so it is best to separate the keys in case one is lost. Each lock barrel has a number that matches the number on the keys ( handy if you own more than one battery ).
How do I get the pedals to fit ?
The end of the pedals are marked with an L for left or an R for right. The left pedal is for the crank arm without the chainring on it. The right is for the arm with the ring.
Both pedal threads should be lightly greased to assist fitting and in case of removal at a later date.
The left pedal threads on anti clockwise and should go on easily by hand. If this is not the case it may be going on squint ( cross threaded ). The right pedal threads on clockwise. Once fitted both pedals should be fully tightened with a 15mm spanner. This prevents the pedals unscrewing and damaging the crank arms.
Can I change the non electric components?
Our non electric parts are bicycle industry standard size eg. 27.2mm seatpost, 25.4 handlebar clamp diameter. We are aware that bar width, stem length, saddle padding etc. are personal preference. Most local bike shops stock a range of parts to customise the bike for the owner, be it extra wide riser bars, shorter steeper stems or inline seat posts.
Can I pay for an eBike through a ride to work scheme?
We accept vouchers from Cyclescheme, Bike Plus, Halfords cycle2work and Caboodle.
Your employer will be able to tell you which one they use, when it can be used and how much you can spend.
I got a puncture in the rear tyre can you send a new tube under warranty?
Tyres, inner tubes, brake pads and the gear system are classed as wear & tear items and are not covered in the warranty by any bike manufacturer.
Investing in heavy duty tyres will reduce the chance of a puncture in the future. Regular maintenance of the gears will ensure smooth running and a better functionality.
How do I fit a throttle to my bike?
My eBike is 14 months old & has developed a problem. As it wasn't used for 3 months over winter is it still within warranty?
Your warranty runs for 12 months from date of delivery for the original owner only. Warranty is non transferable.

I can only get 3 of the 4 lights to turn green on my battery, is this normal?
This is normal. The first light is always red, even when fully charged. The red light is an indication of low power.
My de restricted 1000w wheel doesn't exceed 30mph, is it faulty?
The de restricted 1000w rear motor wheel is described has having a top speed of 25mph. As it exceeds this it is not faulty. If more speed is required a 1500w motor will do this. The wheel is designed to assist the rider but not do all the work.

What is the difference between a standard eBike and a ladies eBike?
Ladies bikes have a step through frame making it easier to get in the saddle. This differs from a standard frame design which some people have difficulty getting their leg over.
Do you have to pedal e-Bikes constantly to make them work?
With our eBikes, you cycle as normal, but utilising the different output modes available, you can choose your level of assistance as you pedal. With a pedal assist system as long as the pedals are turned at 3 mph the motor will engage. If a throttle is used ( off road only ) no pedalling is necessary.
What are the aesthetic differences with an eBike?
At first glance, Cyclotricity models look like any other bikes. A closer look though will reveal a couple of key differences.
A battery pack and a motor.
The slim battery enclosure above the rear wheel ensures that it looks discreet, and will last you up to 30 miles before it needs a recharge.

What is the cost of running an eBike?
Typically an average petrol car will cost 26 pence per mile just on petrol. Whereas an average electric push bike can travel a mile for less than 1 pence. After factoring in MOT's, insurance, road tax, maintenance, parking charges and air fresheners it works out quite a bit cheaper even if the bike is serviced 3 times a year. Thanks to improvements in technology ebikes can now be alternatives to a car as your mode of transport, and thanks to powerful batteries you can now complete your ride on a single charge.
Can I use my eBike to carry goods?
Yes you can, our hybrid bikes have a pannier rack to carry light loads and small bags without making a difference to your ride.
Can I fit a throttle to my eBike?
Yes, but this needs to be done by the owner. Using a throttle electric bike is only legal in private lands & up to 6 kmh.
What size of wheel do I need?
Your wheel size will be written on the sidewall of your current tyre. For example. 26 x 1.95 or (50-559) means you need a 26” eKit. Pick the appropriate conversion kit size expending on what is written on your current tyre. Of course, if you select our middle drive eKit, the wheel size is irrelevant.

As we are an online company we don't have a dedicated showroom, but you are welcome to pop in to our headquarters anytime between 10am & 4pm, Monday to Friday. Are disc brakes better than rim brakes?
Cable actuated disc brakes are better in poor weather and will work even if the rim is buckled. The rim doesn't get worn down because the pads are impacting on a disc instead. The pads are made of a harder compound than rim brake pads and will last longer before needing replaced. The same type of cable is used in both rim and disc brake systems. Servicing or adjusting both types of brake is very simple. Hydraulic disc brakes are more effective in stopping than the cable disc brakes. Servicing a hydraulic brake can be messy and isn't quite as easy.
